Two puppies romped in the beam of light that streamed in through the den entrance. Silver fur flashed as Deidre landed on red-furred Veda, teeth snapping closed on a tuft of scruff. Bemused, Akaisha crossed her forepaws and laid her head down to watch Veda fight her way out of Deidre's grasp on her neck. Akaisha's eyes slid closed as the two wrestled; she knew they wouldn't hurt each other, so there was no need to watch them every moment. Her ears cocked forward to listen for trouble, though. Bathed in warm blood from the very recent death of his entire pack, a lone puppy wailed his terror to the moon. Not quite a cry and not quite a howl, the heartbreaking sound waxed and waned through the early hours of dusk.
